New Zealand’s Scapegrace Distilling Co. has unveiled ThunderDonk, a new flavored whisky distilled in Central Otago. The product, available in Spiced Maple and Salted Caramel flavors, is made with real single malt whisky from Scapegrace’s new distillery on the banks of Lake Dunstan.
The launch follows an 18-month development period and aims to capitalize on the growing flavored whisky market, which is projected to expand from $10 billion in 2023 to nearly $19 billion by 2032.

ThunderDonk: A Playful Brand with Serious Flavors
Scapegrace Co-Founder Daniel McLaughlin says the ThunderDonk name reflects the brand’s boundary-pushing approach.
“ThunderDonk is bringing an independent, bold, and locally made flavoured whisky to the market. This is a drink that’s made to share and unite, and we wanted a name which encapsulated that,” said McLaughlin. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we’re serious about what’s in the bottle, especially when it comes to our flavour profiles.”
Market Positioning and Availability
The new product is designed to deliver a premium drinking experience with a balance of sweet, savory, and spice profiles, making it suitable for cocktails, chilled shots, or neat consumption.
“This is a product that really stands out, whether it’s on the backbar or on your shelf at home. The flavours have been meticulously developed and it’s the perfect drink to enjoy with friends,” McLaughlin added.
